New Year’s Eve 2011 in Florence will be full of music and of famous singers who will perform in four squares in the center of Florence. Elio e le Storie Tese will perform in the center of Florence, opposite the railway station of Santa Maria Novella.
All spectators will be admitted without charge for admission.
The performances in the streets will begin at 21:00 and will run until 02:00 New Year’s Day of 2011, stopping only for the countdown to midnight on December 31.
The city of Florence will be illuminated by the midnight fireworks in typical bright sign of hope for the new year 2011.
In Station Square there will Elio e le Storie Tese, in Republic Square will set the stage for a band Funk Off Vicchio notes that sings jazz, soul and funk.
Classical music concert with Giuseppe Lanzetta will be in Piazza della Signoria, the gospel songs of Millennium Gospel Singers will sing traditional Christmas songs in Piazza Santissima Annunziata.
During these celebrations in the streets of Florence moving with the car will be difficult.

In order to celebrate the fourth centennial anniversary of Caravaggio’s death (Michelangelo Merisi Milan, September 29. 1571 – Porto Ercole, July 18. 1610) will take place in Florence, from May 22 to October 17 2010, an art exhibition of the masterpieces of Caravaggio, considered the first great exponent of baroque painting, and of caravaggisti (Caravaggio’s followers), that will follow an itinerary going from Palazzo Pitti, to Uffizi up to Villa Bardini.

Main works of art are six Caravaggio’s masterpieces of the Palatine Gallery and Uffizi (The Bacchus, The Sleeping Cupid, Medusa, The Tooth Puller, The Sacrifice of Isaac, and The Portrait of a Knight of Malta) to which are added two new paintings that constitute a reacquisition  of the catalogue of Merisi, the Portrait of Maffeo Barberini, of a private collection and the Portrait of Cardinal of Uffizi Gallery, that will be a great surprise for the public.  To Caravaggio’s works of art will be added paintings of all caravaggisti’s painters, came to Florence thanks to the passion and the curiosity of the Medici, first of all Cosimo II, that has immediately noticed the great innovations of Caravaggio, but also thanks to other private Florentine families.

Together with Caravaggio will be celebrated also Roberto Longhi, who before anyone else rediscovered Caravaggio and has revealed his grandeur. At Villa Bardini will be prepared an art exhibition cured by Mina Gregori: Caravaggio and the modernity. Longhi Foundation’s paintings, in which will be exposed the paintings that the great art historian acquired during his life.

The event is promoted by the Ministry of Heritage and Culture, with the Regional Directorate for Cultural Heritage and Landscape in Tuscany, the Suprintendence for the Historical, Artistic and Anthropological Heritage and the Museums of the City of Florence with the Palatine Gallery and the Uffizi gallery, Florence Museums, Ente Cassa di Risparmio di Firenze and, for the exhibition at Villa Bardini, the Foundation Studies in History of Art Roberto Longhi.

A WALK ON THE TERRACES – CATHEDRAL OF SANTA MARIA DEL FIORE – SEPTEMBER 8.

The feast of the Opera of Santa Maria del Fiore, set up in 1985, is celebrated on 8 September every year in memory of the laying of the first stone of the cathedral which took place on the feast of the birth day of Our Lady in 1296 (or according to others, 1298). The principal appointment of the day is the free opening of the terraces of the Duomo for the by now traditional “walk”at height of thirty-two metres, which allows Florentines and visitors to enjoy an extraordinary panoramic view over the city of Florence. The route follows the two sides of the cathedral , including the inner gallery of the counter-façade At the same time, there is the possibility of visiting free of charge the workshop of the Opera del Duomo in Via dello Studio 23/r, where the master masons work on the restoration of the marble works of the monumental complex of the cathedral. From 1997 on, the celebrations have been rounded off by a final concert from the sacred music cycle O flos colende.

ITINERARY OF FLORENCE IN NINETEENTH CENTURY: SQUARES AND MUSIC

It shows to the Florentines and to the tourists how Florence is changed during the last century. The event wants to compare the nineteen century to the medieval and renaissance  in Florence. So they will organize a concert of a military band in a Florentine square. The next days will be on September 27 in Piazza D’Azeglio and October 11 in Piazza Santa Croce.
